Dog Days

June 28, 2009 // Posted in health and fitness  |  No Comments

The dog days of summer have arrived. It is nothing but hot and sticky from here on out. I hope you have some shade when you need to take a break. And be sure to drink plenty of water – you must keep the body hydrated.

Hiking

boots
If you are going hiking, the most important thing to take on your hike is a good pair of boots. You must protect your feet and ankles. Make sure you wear at least one pair of good boot socks so you don’t end up with blisters.  These are the ones I got.

Going camping this weekend

I just needed some alone time with all of the changes that have gone on in my life lately.  Between my cousin passing away, quitting my job and checking out colleges to get into this fall, I just needed a break.  Time to sort out everything and just do nothing but sit back and enjoy nature for awhile.

Being around water and nature calms me.  Everyone needs to find what calms them so when their life becomes hectic, they can go or do what ever it is to help them find their center again.  But who am I to give that kind of advice?  I’m just someone like the rest of us who’s looking for my own center in life.

The hardest thing I have ever done

Yesterday was my cousins funeral.  He passed away the morning after he collapsed.  Since he was an organ donor, it took 24 hours before they released his body to his family.  So yesterday, we buried him.  At least we know that a part of him still lives on in someone that he helped by being an organ donor.

Life just doesn’t seem the same since he’s gone.  Even though we didn’t see each other every day and didn’t talk every day, I knew he was there and if there was something I wanted to talk to him about or just go out for a pizza, he was there.  I have caught myself starting to dial his number to tell him something.  I have never been through something with someone so close to me before and I know it will take time to sort everything out that I’m feeling.

How is this possible?

I just got a call from my mother telling me that my cousin that is just two months younger than I am, collapsed at work.  It seems that he had an aneurysm.   They don’t know if he’s going to make it through the night.  How can this be possible?  He was fine this morning and then all of a sudden had a really bad headache and that was it.   We grew up more like brothers than cousins.

Doctors can do some great things now and hopefully they can bring him back.  The only thing that could stop that is if the Good Lord has decided that his time is up here on earth.  Each day is precious and we have to live each moment like it’s our last and my cousin showed me that.  I just hope and pray that he wakes up tomorrow complaining about being in a hospital gown.
